Life is hell...
EmotionalNow for the mood killer, and the absolute worst thing to happen to me ever...
For the past two weeks, my dog, Gibson Bales Anderson (aka Gibby) has had his health start to go down the shitter. First I just thought he was getting a little pudgy, so I started playing with him more. Well, about a week and a half ago, I walked out the door and found him sitting down. He could barely get up, and he had edema(severe swelling) in his front paws, and his back left leg. A couple days passed and the swelling got worse... finally, he just decided to lay down, and that was that, he didn't budge for almost a week. Then, for the past three days, he hasn't been able to eat or drink. We decided it was time to take him to the Clinic, and that his time had come.
You see, when Gibby was but a wee little pup, he had been diagnosed with heart worms. We put him on treatments left and right, but they just didn't work... So, the vet said he had six months. That was seven and a half years ago.
Well, back on track... We took him to the vet to see if there was anything they could do to make him comfortable or help him. At that point, the swelling was so bad that they had three options:
1. let him go home and suffer...
2. Put him through a long, aggressive therapy session that would just prolong his death.
3. Go ahead and put him to sleep.
At this point, his kidneys had failed, his vascular system was failing, and he had right sided heart failure. The vet was surprised he lasted two weeks.
I sat with him, because we couldn't lift him to the table. They gave him an injection to calm him down. That was at 2:25. Around 2:28 he was already in a calm state, head down, breathing shallow... they brought in the euthanasia injection right then, and administered it, saying it should take 10 to 30 seconds to work. It was a full minute before they called it.
Gibby was always a fighter. He was the most protective dog you could ever meet... and now, he's in a better place, with no fenced in yards, all the eggs and bacon he could ever want, and all the squirrels and cats to chase to his heart's desire... best of all, he can run again... he can stand and walk again...
Goodbye my dear old friend of eleven years. You helped me through some of the hardest, toughest times I had ever been through... I just wish there could have been more I could have done...
